CBGB OMFUG is a little hole-in-the-wall club and that’s just the way everyone wants to keep it. It’s the sort of place where the music is always loud, space is always cramped, there are no blended drinks, cocktails are served in plastic cups, and there’s never any toilet paper in the graffiti scrawled bathroom stalls. It’s a small space with a bar running along one side of the establishment, a standing room only space in front of it, and a stage in the back. There’s a short hall that houses the bathrooms, a back door, and an impossibly narrow and steep stairway to the basement level where a small green room for the bands takes up part of a storage room. The walls are painted black and covered in playbills both current and old and graffiti is painted and carved everywhere.
So what makes this dive so special? Quite simply put – it’s the music. It’s the birthplace of punk rock, new wave, the first place where hard core metal took hold. It is the epicenter for new music in all of New York City. CBGB has an ear for music and has been a nurturing ground for anti-establishment and alternative scenes in the city since 1973. Among the acts that have either been discovered in CBGB or have played in the venue are: Patti Smith, Arto Lindsay, the Ramones, Blondie, Madonna, Talking Heads, Television, the Plasmatics, Murphy’s Law, Sonic Youth, the Beastie Boys, Anthrax, The Strokes, Reagan Youth, Bad Brains, Agnostic Front, Murphy's Law, Cro-Mags, Leeway, Warzone, Gorilla Biscuits, Sick of It All, The Misfits, Straight Ahead, Youth of Today, Mink DeVille, The Shirts, The Heartbreakers, and The Fleshtones.
